Primary Log Breakdown

The use of chipping heads is the most efficient, high production rate of primary log breakdown. Chipping heads can be configured as two vertical with an optional bottom head and can have face mounted saw teeth for smooth surfaces. Thin kerf guided circular saws in twin or quad configuration are close coupled to the chipping heads to produce two or four side cuts that are discharged towards the board edger. Centre two face cants go forward for further processing.

The ” V” chain log infeed conveyor stabilizes a log and transport it through the scanner zone to the log turner and is designed to permit log turning. Prévisualiser les modifications.

The vertical roll log turner utilizes two sets of two pivoting vertical rolls that move vertically in opposite directions to effectively turn a log irrespective of its form or defects. It normally is controlled by the optimizer program based on scanner data but may also be manually operated. It provides an essential first operation for maximum lumber recovery.

As log forms vary, orientation of a log after turning is absolutely required to maintain the optimal sawing axis for best lumber recovery.
To accomplish this, Sawquip has developed an unique infeed that utilizes horizontal rolls that can be positioned laterally to transport a log forward but at the same re-position it to the chipping heads in real time according to data from three scan zones mounted in the infeed. (See Technical Bulletin).
Unlike systems that move the infeed requiring extra length, Sawquip’s CCO is compact, fast and can easily replace existing sharp chain infeeds.

Sawquip has developed this efficient 8’-16’ log infeed to replace existing infeeds that are space restrained and require accurate positioning to chipping canters and/or saws.

A bottom chipping head module has two applications:
It can be combined with a two head canter to produce three sided cants. Logs are fed by a special sharp chain that can position a log vertically to produce the “best opening face”. Twin circular or band saws can be coupled to the canters. This provides a compact primary breakdown. It can also be used as the first chipping module of a four head curve sawing chipping canter with normally a vertical positioning belt feed.

The chipping canter is the versatile work horse of primary log processing. It can process logs to two faces eliminating side slabs while being fed with a standard auto-centering sharp chain infeed, a vertical roll log infeed such as the HE, and the high performance CCO infeed. It can be combined with close coupled circular saws (single or double arbor, guided or non-guided), twin band saws and a bottom chipping head module. It is capable of very high production rates while producing quality two side faces on a log.
